Beach across the road
Directly across the road from Bod Idris is a sandy cove that was once used for ship building. The railway now runs alongside on an embankment and access to the beach is via a small tunnel. The beach is quiet and of soft sand. While it can provide endless hours of fun for digging or fishing, due to the strong currents that flow in and out of the estuary it is not safe for bathing.
Barmouth Beach extends for some 1.5miles northwards from the quay to Llanaber and continues for afurther 8 miles towards Harlech. Around Dyffryn are extenstive and large sand dunes. The ebach has excellent clean water for swimming and other activities.
A promenade built in the late 1920 provides for car, bicycle and pedestrian access to the beach, making it one of the most easily accessed beaches in North Wales.
At the quay end of the beach is a small area of sand dunes that together with a headland once formed an island breakwater that sheltered the harbour. In the recent past the landward channel was filled in so that access by foot is now possible to a sandy dune area that leads to the headland. Seaward of this dune and headland, extensive sands and pools stretch to the ‘bar’ of Barmouth. These areas can easily be reached on foot from Bod Idris. At the Llanaber ‘end of the prom’ the low water mark is some 200m from the promenade, while high water reaches the promenade and ensures that beach is swept clean.
